New Suprematism: Arnaud Gibersztajn at Galerie Buci, Paris | 8.31 - 10.31.25 by Liz Riviere

The Galerie de Buci presents New Suprematism, an online exhibition of recent watercolors by Arnaud Gibersztajn, available from September 1 to October 31, 2025.

Arnaud Gibersztajn approaches painting as a coded system of communication. He compares his process to the learning of a language, where the gestures of line and the transparencies of color create an alphabet of perception. Each work becomes a message that can only be read through attention to tone, rhythm, and inflection.

The series consists of works on paper, 9 × 12 inches, executed in pencil and watercolor. Each is untitled, yet each holds a distinct energy. Lines stretch and interrupt, washes expand across the surface, and empty spaces generate tension. The watercolors operate as fragments of thought, delicate yet insistent, charged with both vulnerability and control.

For Gibersztajn, the act of painting is a form of risk. A brushstroke too assertive will collapse the balance of the sheet. A weak line will fracture the composition. He describes this process as riding a thin line of equilibrium, a state in which the painter and the work remain in constant negotiation. When this balance emerges, the painting communicates directly, bypassing narrative and argument, moving instead through sensation.

The exhibition situates these works in the lineage of artists the painter has long admired, from Rembrandt’s shadowed interiors to Monet’s atmospheric dissolutions, from the material intensity of Soulages to the spatial fields of Rothko. In New Suprematism, these references appear not as citations but as undercurrents, guiding the artist’s search for clarity within abstraction.

The watercolors present themselves without rhetoric. Their modest size concentrates attention. Their openness grants the viewer a point of entry. What follows depends on the capacity of the spectator to listen to what painting, in its most distilled form, might still say.

Work is available for purchase on line.
